Dr Seuss’ 100th Birthday
MARCH 2, 2004
Executive Director, Dr. Scott Barkin & Director of
Nutritional Services, Todd Adelman appeared on WNBC-TV’s program
Weekend Today in New York to promote Block Institute, Read
Across America Day, the Suessentenial and the joy of reading. |
| Education: (376 Bay 44th Street)
Theme – Dish Up Reading – combining learning to read
with activities related to foods. Finding different foods in books;
learning about letters by identifying foods that begin with each
letter; enhancing the reading process with hands on activities;
relating what appears on the page to a child’s reality.
Two classes put on short skits during a welcoming assembly. One
focused on food and letters, the other highlighted Dr. Seuss. The
entire student body celebrated the Seussentenial by singing happy
birthday to Dr. Seuss. Students wore chef hats and classes did
lessons on the foods they had discovered. |

| Adult Day Services: (376 Bay 44th Street) Theme – Dish Up Reading – learning about different
cultures and locations using ethnic foods and reading.
Each group chose a different world locale. They researched the area,
including the food and books that describe the culture, etc. Bulletin
boards reflected each group’s choice and what they had read about and
learned. On March 2nd, each group sampled a dish from their
selected area and staff read about the dish’s origins and the culture of
that locale to the group.

Theme - Oh, The Places You’ll Go – United States –
learning about different areas of our country through reading and
discussion.
Each group chose one of the United States. They went on trips to the
library and took out books on their chosen state. Bulletin boards were
decorated with information gathered about each group’s chosen state.
Participants from each group went around to all of the rooms to report
to everyone what they had discovered during their reading and read
about their state to each group.
Groups baked birthday cakes decorated in the style of Dr. Seuss and
the cakes were judged for prizes relating to the theme.

“party” to exhibit and enjoy all that they had learned, complete with
appropriate ethnic foods, music and decoration.
The program also sponsored a poetry contest. Each residence solicited
poems from staff and residents. Poems were read that night and voted on.
Each residence sent their winning poems to compete against the other
